Internship Opportunities

Internship positions have been developed for two of our research projects and they are described below. Anyone interested should send a resume to the Wildlife Information Center, P.O.Box 198, Slatington, PA 18080.

Internships can be for academic credit, the student may take a leave of absence to pursue the internship, or (in the case of the biodiversity surveys) the internship can be done in the summer on a part-time basis while still taking classes.

Students or faculty members interested in developing new internship positions should contact the Center with proposals. The Center is seeking funding to support intern expenses.

Bake Oven Knob Hawk Watch Internship

Type of Position:                  Wildlife Research Intern

Number of Positions:          Maximum of 2

Dates of Position:                 August 15 through November 30, 2003 plus training sessions prior to 8/15

Qualifications:                      Student must be competent, responsible researcher able to keep organized detailed records of observations. Hawk identification skills or hawk count experience is desired but not necessary. Student must learn hawk ID before project begins.

Equipment Needed:            Good quality binoculars and hawk ID guides. The Center can provide these if necessary. It will also provide weather data collection equipment and data sheets.

Responsibilities:                  Conduct daily hawk count 5- 6 days per week (weather permitting) at Bake Oven Knob in Lehigh County, PA (about 20 miles northeast of Allentown). Involvement in other research projects in conjunction with the count. Record, report, and analyze data; help publish results.

Compensation:                     $400-500 per month plus housing.

Housing:                                Student must find housing in vicinity of Bake Oven Knob. The Center will provide assistance in finding such housing.

Extensions:                            Other research projects as designed by the student or participation in Wildlife Center hawk migration research projects.

NOTE:                                    This project can be part of a student’s undergraduate or graduate research work at the discretion of the University. The student may be matriculated and earning credits, on a leave of absence, or postgraduate.

Position may be filled before deadline. Application deadline: April 30, 2003. The Wildlife Information Center will not be liable for any accidents or injuries that occur while interns are working on Center projects.

Lehigh Valley Park Lands Biodiversity Survey Internship

Type of Position:                  Wildlife Research Intern

Number of Positions:          unlimited

Dates of Position:                 variable

Qualifications:                      Student must be competent, responsible researcher able to keep organized detailed records of observations. Experience in identification of any group of vertebrates, arthropods, or plants required.

Responsibilities:                  Conduct surveys of one or more groups of organisms in one or more Lehigh Valley area parks. Record, report, and analyze data; help publish results.

Extensions:                            Photographing species

Compensation:                     none

NOTE:                                    This project can be part of a student’s undergraduate or graduate research work at the discretion of the University. Many Lehigh Valley area schools are working with the Center to include these internships as part of formal intern programs or as part of Senior Projects.
